INTERACTIVE ROAD SAFETY LAB

Safety Lab

In development · working prototype

Change the conditions. Understand the difference.

We are developing a space where you can pause a traffic situation, explore it from every angle and try a different outcome. Kooperativa Safety Lab combines an interactive 3D scene with a clear explanation of the factors that affect a vehicle's stopping distance.

FROM OBSERVATION TO UNDERSTANDING

One situation. Several possible outcomes.

What changes when a driver reacts later? How do speed and a wet road affect the outcome? The lab lets you adjust individual conditions and compare the new result with the original. Numbers become a clear story unfolding in space and time.

Speed

See how changing speed affects the distance covered during the reaction period and subsequent braking.

Reaction time

Try a longer delay before braking begins and explore how far the vehicle travels during that time.

Road surface

Compare modelled dry, wet and snowy road conditions. See the change directly in the scene.

THE EXPERIMENT, STEP BY STEP

Experience. Explore. Change. Understand.

  1. Experience the situation

Watch the traffic scenario and notice the moment a problem appears ahead of the vehicle.

  2. Explore it in 3D

Change the camera angle, pause playback and use the timeline to revisit the key moment.

  3. Change the conditions

Adjust speed, reaction time or road surface. Then run the same situation with the new settings.

  4. Compare the outcome

Compare both versions, including reaction distance, braking distance and the space before the obstacle.

SCENARIOS AND TOPICS

Situations worth a closer look.

The first scenario focuses on stopping before an unexpected obstacle. Planned topics broaden the perspective to attention, grip, visibility and following distance.

Unexpected obstacle

In the prototype

How do speed, reaction time and road surface affect whether the vehicle stops before the obstacle in the model?

Phone use while driving

Planned

A planned topic exploring distraction and delayed reactions as a situation develops.

Wet road

Planned

The same situation under different grip and braking conditions.

Blind spot

Planned

Viewing a situation from different positions to reveal what the driver may not see.

Following distance

Planned

The gap between vehicles as a margin for reacting to a changing situation.

POSSIBLE USES

A starting point for lessons and discussion.

We are developing the project as a visual tool for explaining traffic situations. Content and ways of using it can be explored further with future users.

Driving schools and education

Support a lesson with a situation that can be examined step by step and from several perspectives.

Prevention and awareness

Clearly illustrate the relationship between attention, road conditions and the outcome of a situation.

Workshops and presentations

Compare alternatives together and discuss why a small change in conditions can lead to a different sequence of events.

WHERE THE PROJECT STANDS

A prototype as the first step.

What we are testing

  • An interactive 3D reconstruction of an obstacle scenario.
  • Playback, a timeline and different camera views.
  • Adjustable speed, reaction time and surface with outcome comparison.
  • Experiment history stored in the browser.

What comes next

  • Additional traffic scenarios and learning content.
  • Further visual design and introductory materials.
  • Expert validation of the model and feedback for further development.
